The Cathedral of the Madonna del Ponte: history, art, devotion

MENU

The Cathedral of the Madonna del Ponte in Lanciano is a symbol of great religious, artistic, civic, and historical significance for the city. Unique in its kind, as it is built on the arches of the Diocletian Bridge, it is an authentic architectural masterpiece that visually narrates centuries of history, art, and faith. Upon entering the 19th-century façade designed by Michitelli, known for his neoclassical modernization of Piazza del Plebiscito, visitors can discover precious artistic treasures and symbols of the devotion to the Madonna del Ponte, a devotion that is celebrated and renewed every year during the centuries-old “Feste di Settembre.”

The project aims to create a virtual tour that explores the Cathedral and its related elements, with the support of the Cultural Institutes of the Diocese, including the Museum, Archive, and Library, highlighting all aspects related to the foundation and history of this important place of worship.

Rich in notable works of art, the Cathedral represents several centuries of the community’s history. The virtual tour will allow visitors to journey through this masterpiece.
